It was about a couple of months ago that I had this weird dream. I dreamt that I gave birth to a perfect little baby boy! Means my firstborn is a son! Yar, coz immediately after I woke up, I replayed the dream in my head, so I can quite vividly remember it. I had a few girl friends who just gave birth, all of them had daughters. I wanted a son. I was pregnant then, but I didn't know the sex of my baby. Ok so, then one day I was rushed to the hospital. (Don't remember feeling any pain) Then I gave birth to a lovely baby boy! Yar, he's super cute. With a tuft of black hair and big shiny ebony marble-like eyes. Then the dream changed setting. I was at home, lying on my bed. My son was on my chest. He had the tenderest, softest, most flawless skin I ever seen. And he was smart too. He smiles and talks unlike babies his age who cry and gurgle.
When people around me go for abortions, I feel very sad. I don't like the idea of it. But euthanisia is a different story. I don't have a strong stand on that issue. Although I think it should be done for the good of everyone. So I don't know if I'm pro-life or pro-choice. Actually, if the issue of abortion were to come out in a GP essay, I would take the stand of a pro-choicer. It's just easier to argue. Just like in 12th Night, when the question asks "Do you pity Malvolio?" I will say no although I feel the other way. How to write "Fantasizing is perfectly normal. Everyone does it." and make it sound convincing?
Back to the topic of abortions. Why I think that it's not morally acceptable is simply because I feel life begins at conception. That's all, so human rights should be extended to the embryo too.
Even if it's there by rape, because an embryo conceived from rape shouldn't have less rights than one conceived from consensual sex.
Even if it's mentally or physically handicapped, because we don't kill handicapped people, and we don't kill people who are lousy at math, or ugly people.
Only when the mother's life is at risk, is abortion justified.
But then pro-choicers do have strong stands too. And it sounds logical.
To call an embryo an "unborn child", is to call an adult an "undead corpse". Everyone is going to die one day, but you can't treat them like they're already dead. Just because the embryo has the potential to be a human being does not mean it IS a human being.
A foetus is a biological parasite and cannot claim rights to live within its host. if a woman have no rights to her own body, how can a foetus have the rights to hers? I'm not obliged to donate my bone marrow to you to save your life.
Just because the foetus is capable of feeling pain and emotion does not give it rights. Animals can feel pain too. But we are justified in killing them for food.
And also all the social problems the banning of abortions will bring about, overpopulation, poverty, abuse, back alley abortions...
All these arguments can actually be deflated one by one.
Anyway, Singapore is 14th in this year's IMO! That's real good man. Top in ASEAN coz we beat Vietnam by a small margin of 2 points. The team is not back in Singapore yet. But their constant mail about problems, scores, results, girlfriends, hurricanes...has been flooding my small hotmail inbox. Better change to gmail soon. Sigh so exciting, I'll never be part of the excitement.
SINGAPORE

SGP2 2 7 0 7 0 2 18 Bronze
SGP3 2 1 1 7 7 7 25 Silver

The cutoff is 7(honor), 12(bronze), 23(silver), 35(gold). Some participants got 0. That's sad. But some got 42 too, which is full marks. I don't think i'm even able to get an honourble mention. Maybe if i draw the diagram for the geometry question and try to whack it, can at most get 1.
